Abamico in the mid’s in rural China I was filled with helplessness and horror as I read of among other things arranged marriages, foot binding, death, and abuse. I am admittedly grateful for not ever having to experience these often overwhelmingly harsh relationships in the way that these women did!

I suppose I enjoyed the book so much, that I wanted to be able to delve into the characters’ lives just seeda much more. Last night I watched Grandma.
It made me appreciate the freedom women enjoy today, as well as the potential depth of female friendship. This is so beautifully demonstrated in the bond between the narrator, Lily, and Snow Flower, her “old same”. So, thank you, Lisa See! I never felt the slightest semblance of hope. ssee

Most of the story is about their feeling toward each other which deep and full of emotion. I picked this up after reading three Holocaust novels in a row.
When our days are consumed with the details of running a home. I enjoyed learning about nu shu, men and women’s daily lives, rites and reflecting about the relationship between the constant risk of an agricultural society and the emotional regulation it allows to its members.
I loved the story of friendship between Lily and Snow Flower though sometimes I found myself feeling a little uncomfortable with how intimately close they were. Lists with This Book. Can you imagine someone reviewing American Psycho as bringing to life liisa entire culture?
I really appreciate the author’s effort to not judge or present those values as simply wrong or antiquated. And I wonder at the morality of the wealthy women who could cast out her beloved friend without a hearing. I will even go as far as saying that Snow Flower and the Secret Fan has ties to The Handmaid’s Talebecause it’s about strong female relationships in a terribly restricting, even violent society for women.
It’s almost like See spent so much effort on the world building that she ran out of steam for character development and plot. I cannot believe those women were subjected to such brutal mutilation for the sake of beauty. The husbands, on the other hand, could apparently do whatever they liked – take concubines, beat their wives, discard their wives, etc.
We linger a moment longer in front of the mirror and make a mental note of statistics made by different body parts. When we were young and doing the things children did, certain body type templates crept into our brains without our knowledge. Someone bucking convention, a women who refuses to have her feet bound, ep, or leaves ssda husband and strikes out alone. I mean, everything in centred around making the husband feel like a king, if not the husband then the father, if not the father then the son. I had the wrong expectations as I entered this book. I felt transported back to a time period that I am extremely grateful I do not live in. Heck, I read it.
